Day 1: Bukavu – Kahuzi-Biega National Park – Bukavu

EARLY MORNING: DEPARTURE FROM BUKAVU (5:30 – 6:00 AM)

Your day starts early — around 5:30 to 6:00 AM. Wake up at your hotel or lodge in Bukavu and have a good breakfast. You’ll need it.

Your driver-guide will pick you up for the drive to Kahuzi-Biega National Park headquarters. It’s about 56 minutes, 32.4 km via N3, or roughly an hour from Bukavu.

The N3 from Bukavu to Kahuzi-Biega is scenic but bumpy — part tarmac, part dirt/murram. A 4×4 is best.

The drive itself feels like a mini tour. You’ll pass Lake Kivu views, rural Congolese life, tea plantations, rolling hills, and then dense rainforest as you get to the park.

You’ll head into the lush rainforest with rangers to find the Eastern lowland gorilla families.

On the way, look out for other wildlife, birds, and the park’s plants. Once you find the gorillas, you get up to one hour with them.

As you leave the park, soak in the last sights and sounds of Kahuzi-Biega’s tropical forest.

You might spot monkeys, birds, and thick vegetation by the roadside. On the way back, you can choose to stop at Lwiro Chimpanzee Sanctuary.

It cares for over 90 chimps and other primates rescued from poaching. It’s an inspiring conservation project just outside the park.

The road winds through green hills, coffee farms, and banana plantations. Afternoon light turns the farmland golden — perfect for photos.

You’ll pass small Congolese villages with roadside markets and busy community life — farmers in the fields, kids walking home from school.

Near Bukavu, the southern shores of Lake Kivu come back into view. The calm water with fishing boats is a peaceful way to end the safari day.
