How to get to Kahuzi-Biega National Park (Getting There)

There are various means of transport tourists can used to get to Kahuzi-biega National Park Congo on your Congo safari. These various transport means include water, air and road transport that enable visitors have unforgettable experience of Congo gorilla safaris within the park.

Kahuzi Biega National Park is situated 30 Kms from Bukavu Town and it takes about 1 and a half hours drive to arrive in the National Park. The park is easily accessed by road and by air. Aircrafts land at kavumu airport. From this airport, take left from miti town and keep going straight until you reach the visitor center.

Getting to Kahuzi Biega National Park By road

The park is located 40 km west of Bukavu. It takes approximately 1 to 1½ hours’ drive from Bukavu to the entrance of the park. Take the road going to Kavumu Airport and go left at the junction in the town of Miti. Keep moving straight until you arrive at the Tschivanga tourist center.

From Rwanda, while driving on Road it takes 5 to 6 hours from Kigali town to the city of Cyangugu, also baptized Kamembe (station border of Ruzizi I). It is the nearby town to Bukavu, after crossing the two borders; it is approximately 1 and half-hours to reach the Park Headquarters and the closest lodgings in the Park.

Beginning from Goma in Congo near Virunga National Park, there is a road linking to kivu town, and it takes about 5 to 6 hours driving. The surprising landscape and the company of the lac will reward you with outstanding view.

While coming from Burundi it consumes approximately 3 hours to reach the park, you will have to cross Rwanda border of Ruwa then Ruzizi 1. The road to the Kahuzi Biega National Park from Burundi is straight.

Then starting the journey from Goma into the Democratic Republic of Congo, you can go through Bukavu using the road along lake Kivu. Getting to the park is approximately 200km taking about 6 hours or more. Since the road is in a bad shape, it’s not recommended for travelers.

By water

There are ferries that transport tourists and people from Goma to Bukavu but the most reliable is Ihusi express which takes 3-4 hours at a fee of about US $ 50. The Luxury/VIP Boat costs about $100 per person with accommodation inclusive and it takes 6 hours with different stops for photos. There is also a speed boat that is from Goma to Bukavu which goes for US $ 1500 and carries 15 passengers as it goes through the Idjwi Island.

By flight.

Air trips are attainable from Rwanda to Kahuzi Biega National Park and they land in Goma. Tourists are then picked from the airport to their Congo safari destinations. Some tourists on arrival hire a boat or hire cars to take them to the park headquarters. However, this is discouraged and we advise tourists to book safaris with a tour company other than travelling alone.
